Kilkenny is an Irish red ale whose history begins at St. Francis Abbey in Kilkenny in 1710; the brand is brewed by Guinness. The colour is deep amber-red, the taste soft and velvety, with caramel notes, a light hop bitterness and a barely perceptible roasted finish. Serve chilled at 6–8 °C in a traditional ale glass or a pint: pour sharply at a 45-degree angle, then let the head settle. It goes with steaks, grilled pork ribs, roast meat and burgers, with aged cheeses such as cheddar and gouda, with meat pies and Irish beef stew, and with nuts, spiced croutons and meat crisps.
