Jägermeister is a German herbal liqueur produced in Wolfenbüttel since 1934. The recipe uses 56 botanicals: herbs, roots, fruits and citrus peels from around the world. After infusion the liqueur is aged for at least a year in oak casks, which gives it depth and roundness. The flavour is complex and concentrated, bittersweet: orange peel, spice, liquorice and cinnamon are clearly present, followed by herbal bitterness. The finish is long and warming. It is 35% ABV. The classic serve is an ice-cold shot: the bottle is frozen to around −18 °C, at which point the liqueur turns thick and viscous and loses its alcoholic edge; it is drunk in one go from small glasses. In cocktails the best-known format is the Jägerbomb with an energy drink, and it also mixes with cola, ginger ale and soda. At room temperature or lightly chilled it works as a digestif after a heavy meal.
