Hacker-Pschorr Kellerbier is a traditional unfiltered, unpasteurised bottom-fermented beer from the Munich brewery whose records begin in 1417. The name means 'beer from the cellar': it was once drunk straight from the barrel in the cool cellars of the breweries. The colour is a deep amber-gold, slightly hazy from the natural yeast sediment, under a dense creamy head. The aroma is fresh and rich in malt, with notes of caramel, honey, freshly baked bread and the delicate herbal tones of noble hops. The taste is full-bodied, soft and harmonious: malt sweetness carefully balanced by a gentle hop bitterness and a light sparkling acidity on the finish. The texture is velvety and lively, the carbonation moderate, which makes the beer exceptionally easy to drink. Serve at 7–9 °C; kellerbier should not be drunk ice-cold, or the nuances of its malt aroma are lost. Pour it into a traditional ceramic stein or a heavy glass mug at a slight angle, letting the head form and hold the aroma. Its rich malt profile pairs the beer with hearty Bavarian cooking: a salted Munich pretzel, fried sausages with braised cabbage and mustard, pork knuckle and ribs, grilled poultry with herbs. Among cheeses, choose semi-hard aged ones — Gouda, Edam, a mild Cheddar.
