Bugulma balsam is a strong spirit produced by Tatspirtprom, Russia, to a traditional recipe. It is 40% ABV, based on Alpha-class spirit, with a blend of 24 botanicals: medicinal herbs, roots, spices and berries, including rowan. The colour is deep dark brown with cognac highlights. The nose is complex and warming, with pronounced wild herbs, spice, honey and light fruit. The palate is dense and lightly astringent, with pleasant sweetness, warm spice and a long finish. Serve in small glasses at room temperature or lightly chilled, or over ice in a rocks glass. It is traditionally taken as a digestif after a substantial dinner; one or two teaspoons in hot tea or coffee lend an aroma of meadow herbs and spice. At the table it suits desserts, dark chocolate, nuts and fruit.
